2 shot dead, several injured at Chicago-area party

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) – Two people were killed and more than a dozen were injured in a nighttime shooting at a Halloween party in suburban Chicago, authorities said on Sunday.

A patrol sergeant heard about a dozen gunshots after 12:30 a.m. in Joliet, about 70 miles southwest of Chicago, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office. The sergeant visited a house and found over 100 people fleeing a party.

Additional officers arrived and found casualties in the backyard and in nearby homes, and more gunshots were heard nearby, authorities said.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office said more than a dozen people had been hospitalized. Two were confirmed dead and four others were seriously injured.

Police estimated that around 200 people attended a Halloween party at the house and the shooting took place outside near a backyard DJ booth.

Authorities said it appeared the shooting took place from “an elevated position on a porch overlooking the crowd.”

Witnesses told police they believed there were two shooters.

Police did not give further details, including a motive.

“This investigation is still in its early stages and staff from the Will County Sheriff’s Office are still on scene to preserve the crime scene and collect evidence,” the office said in a press release.
