Skilled workers are in demand across the country, and Chicago-area businesses tell NBC 5 there are plenty of well-paying jobs in industries that aren’t going anywhere, heating and air conditioning specialists to truck drivers.

“There are a lot of people between the ages of 35 and 55 who can very well be professional truck drivers,” said Dave Moss of the Illinois Trucking Association.

Moss added that it is common in today’s economy for a truck driver to earn a lucrative connection bonus and earn almost six figures a year if he is willing to stay away for a few weeks. at a time.

“It’s a big industry. It’s been around forever, ”Moss said.

Experts in the commerce industry say skilled workers retire earlier and many high schools are focusing more on preparing students for college.

However, instructors at the Technology Center of DuPage, which partners with more than thirty suburban high schools, said they were seeing more young people eager to enter a trade.

“We receive students who have not succeeded in traditional circles and they succeed here on a daily basis. Then we have the students who are great students in their buildings and they’re looking for a more hands-on approach to their learning, ”Principal Jason Hlavacs said.

TCD students collect hammers and trades tools so they can be prepared after leaving high school.

“If they are accepted into a union apprenticeship, they will become a journeyperson within four or five years and earn a lot of money,” said Steve Cervenka, HVAC and residential wiring instructor.

Amara Gutierrez, a junior at Lisle high school, said her goal was to become a union electrician and possibly a dentist.

She described what it is like to learn valuable professional skills while attending TCD for part of her school day.

“Just see how at the beginning you can start with the simpler things and it can seem complicated in a way when you plan things and where to put them and later it can just build and create, you see it small. step by step, create something you’ve worked so hard for, ”said Gutierrez.
