New “temple” for Southeastern New Life Covenant Church – CBS Chicago
CHICAGO (CBS) – It’s near an old Sears.
Now the goal is to serve the community in many ways. This is a long vacant property near 76th and Greenwood in Grand Crossing.

CBS 2’s Marissa Parra explains the mission behind “The Temple”.
“The Temple” has nearly 4,000 seats inside, which he hopes will also boost the local economy in Grand Crossing.
“I want to see the dance come here, the musicals, the plays, the jazz brought here,” said Pastor John Hannah, who added that his personal choice was gospel.
“So we call it a ‘church’ – it’s a theater and a church,” Hannah said.
It has been a long time coming. Over the past 14 years, Southeastern New Life Alliance Church had several houses.

“We had to move,” Hannah said. “We rented facilities; Hayes Center, King High School, UIC Pavilion.
And then, he set his sights on the 77th and Greenwood.
“This community was first known as the ‘dead zone’ (because there was no company fighting to get here,” Hannah said. “I was told what we wanted build, we could never build it. “
Almost 200 jobs were lost when the iconic Sears in Grand Crossing closed in 2013. So being able to bring back both more jobs and new hope is what he calls the greatest blessing. .
“Normally you have to go to the suburbs or downtown to see something of this magnitude,” Hannah said. “I was born and raised in this city. I love this city. I love that I can raise the bar when it comes to this city.
