Illinois sees an almost 50% drop in weekly jobless claims; Over 8,000 filed last week – CBS Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) – More than 8,000 new jobless claims were filed in Illinois last week, about half of the total filed a week earlier.

A total of 8,089 new compensation claims were filed statewide in the week of September 6, according to the Illinois Department of Job Security, down 48% from the week previous, when 15,570 new jobless claims were filed in Illinois the week of August 30.

Claims last week were the fewest since the start of the pandemic. Illinois has not seen so few jobless claims in a week since February 2020.

By comparison, Illinois recorded 27,384 cases in the week of September 7 last year. However, Illinois only registered 6,614 claims in the same week in 2019.

The drop in unemployment in Illinois came as compensation claims surged nationwide, with an estimated total of 332,000 claims filed across the country last week, up from 312,000 the week before.

There were 15,546 new jobless claims filed in Illinois during the week of August 23.
