The Illinois Department of Natural Resources today released details of the fall trout season, which is scheduled to open Oct. 16; the first version with capture and release will open on a few sites on October 2.
Illinois’ fall trout season kicks off on October 16. The first season of capture and release will begin on October 2 at a few selected sites.
Here are the details from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (it looks like those in our area, home to forest reserves, were included in the list of sites, but I’ll check):
Fall trout fishing season opens in Illinois on October 16
. . .
SPRINGFIELD, Illinois. – The 2021 Illinois fall trout fishing season will open on Saturday, Oct. 16 in 59 ponds, lakes and streams statewide.
An early opportunity at select trout fishing grounds – the fall release fishing season – will open on October 2. No trout can be kept during the catch-and-release period, but anglers can keep trout after the regular season opens starting October 16.
The Illinois Catchable Trout program is funded by those who use the program through the sale of Inland Trout stamps. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) stores more than 80,000 rainbow trout each year in bodies of water where trout fishing is permitted during the fall season. 80,000 additional trout are stocked for the spring season which begins each April.
For the fall trout season 2021, no trout may be taken from stocked sites until the season opens at 5 a.m. on October 16. During the season, the daily catch limit is five trout.
The fall trout season offers families opportunities to get out and fish. Resources are available to Take Kids Fishing at https://www.ifishillinois.org/Kids_Fishing/kidsfishing.html.
All anglers – including those intending to release fish caught before October 16 – must have an Illinois fishing license and an indoor trout stamp which are available at license locations. and IDNR permits, including many bait shops, sporting goods stores and other retail outlets. Check the IDNR website for locations at https://www.exploremoreil.com/agentlocator
Fishing licenses and stamps for trout can be purchased using a credit card online through the IDNR website at https://www.exploremoreil.com/
Fall trout fishing season participants are reminded to follow current CDC and Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines regarding face masks and social distancing.
For more information on all site regulations, anglers should contact the individual sites that will be stocked with catch-size trout. Not all sites open at 5:00 a.m. on opening day. Anglers are reminded to check the opening times of their favorite sites before the opening date.
