Few, if any, races in Illinois had more candidates on the ballot than the Democratic congressional primary in 1st District, but Jonathan Jackson managed to fend off 16 other candidates and secure the party’s nomination in the election, according to Associated Press drafts.

The election for the seat became completely free after Rep. Bobby Rush announced he would not seek re-election in the reconfigured district, which now includes parts of Chicago, Cook County, Will County and of Kankakee County.

Jackson, the son of Reverend Jesse Jackson and brother of former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., has come under fire from his political opponents for receiving donations from cryptocurrency-related political action committees.

Those donations helped pay for a belated flurry of radio, TV and billboard ads for Jackson as he sought to distinguish himself in the vast field, and the strategy worked as he fended off 16 candidates.

Jackson was among a crowded field of candidates that included Karin Norington-Reaves, who won Rush’s endorsement for the seat. Norington-Reaves finished in the top three of the race, but couldn’t quite get past the top in the crowded field.

Chicago Ald. Pat Dowell looks set to claim second place in the election, with State Senator Jacqui Collins also receiving more than 10% in the election.

The seat is expected to remain in Democratic hands in November, with the general election scheduled for November 8.

The Orioles and White socks square off Saturday with the first pitch scheduled for 2:10 p.m. ET. The game takes place at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago, Illinois and will only be available on local television or through a MLB.tv subscription. Spenser Watkins (0-1, 6.00 ERA) will start for the Orioles while the White Sox will counter with Lance Lynn (1-0, 5.79 ERA) as a starter.

Although many have dismissed the Orioles as an uncompetitive team in the short term, they have certainly turned the tide lately. Baltimore is 7-3 in its last 10 games, including a 2-0 lead in its current series with the White Sox. Friday’s 4-1 win over Chicago was sparked by Austin Voth and four relievers combined with a hit that extended Chicago’s extended losing streak to three games heading into Saturday.

Chicago’s loss on Friday extends their three-game losing streak to 33-36, good for third place in the AL Central. After many identified the White Sox as favorites to win the division early on, they find themselves on the outside looking for an AL Wild Card spot, sitting 4.5 games behind the Minnesota twins and Tampa Bay Stingrays. Lynn’s return is a bright spot for a roster that has been plagued by injuries, including the continued absence of slugger Eloy Jimenez.

Odds, picks and predictions

run line: White Sox -1.5 (+100)
Run total: 9
Moneyline Odds: Orioles +160, White Sox -190

Moneyline choice: White Sox-190

Chicago has been plagued by injuries and their 0-2 deficit against Baltimore isn’t encouraging, but I don’t see them getting swept away in this four-game homestand. After the team’s one hit performance on Friday, I’m expecting a much better outing on Saturday and leaning in with the White Sox for a well deserved win.

Choice of player accessories: Andrew Vaughn on 0.5 RBIs (+130)

While there haven’t been many face-offs between Watkins and these White Sox hitters in the past, Vaugh did homer against him in two at-bats. It’s a small sample, but given the team’s disappointing overall performance at the plate on Friday, I’m expecting better on Saturday. I take Vaugh to replicate his success against Watkins and go with his RBIs.

Chicago, Ill. (WBBM) – Yellowstone National Park is slowly reopening after devastating flooding last week, and a Chicago company is closely monitoring the situation from 1,300 miles away.

Morning Insider Lauren Victory shares the key role the park has played in growing the business.

On the site of a former pork processing plant at Pershing Road and Halsted Street you will find the production of a new type of protein called Fy.

It may not look very appetizing as it grows, but Fy-based breakfast patties are starting to gain popularity, especially in the vegan world.

“We don’t need pesticides. We don’t need insecticide. We don’t need hormones,” said Thomas Jonas, CEO and co-founder of Nature’s Fynd, the company that developed Fy.

It is not of animal or plant origin. Fy comes from mushrooms. It is made from microbes.

“If you’ve ever had a beer in your life, if you’ve ever had a piece of cheese in your life, then you’ve probably — you’ve actually — eaten something that’s made with microbes,” Jonas explained.

CBS 2 got a tour of Fy’s manufacturing process at the company’s factory in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. The microbe takes on nutrients and multiplies in a fermentation room. Then it turns into a solid protein. About four days after departure, a robot helps “harvest” the Fy. It is then processed and packaged into two types of breakfast patties and two types of dairy-free cream cheese.

Nature’s Fynd developed its Fy cultivation technology in Chicago, but the edible mushrooms originally come from acidic sources in Yellowstone National Park. It was discovered as part of a NASA-funded research mission into life in extreme environments.

“Given the history we have with the park and the partnership we have with the park today, it’s even more heartbreaking,” Jonas said, speaking of the devastating floods that hit Yellowstone earlier this month. .

Roads were washed out, forcing park closures, which then prevented visitors from trying Nature’s Fynd products that were available in Yellowstone for the first time this season.

Back in Chicago, the protein’s cultivation is going so well that a second factory is being worked on, and food scientists are already testing what’s next on the menu.

CBS 2 asked if the national park system and/or the federal government supports the work that Nature’s Fynd is doing, given that the microbe came from Yellowstone and the company is now monetizing it.

“Giving back to the park was very important to us. We think the mission of the park is something really meaningful and important to all of us,” Jonas said. “So we approached the park and set up a benefit sharing program. And we are very proud of it. It’s something that matters to us. »

The society also recently donated to flood relief efforts, honoring the park’s history while serving the future.

In a few weeks, Nature’s Fynd technology is expected to head into space. The mission: to see if Fy can be grown on the International Space Station to provide food for astronauts.

For the first time, the season will also feature an All-Star weekend taking place in the Bahamas the weekend after the title game.

Trilogy entered the season as the defending champion after having defeated the 3-headed monsters in last season’s league game. With the win, Trilogy became the first team in league history to win multiple titles. It will be a tough task for Trilogy to repeat this season, as they lost veteran guard Jarrett Jack in the offseason. Jack, who is now an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns, was central to the team’s success last season.

New faces in the league this season include several NBA veterans like Alonzo Gee, KJ McDaniels, Corey Brewer and Mike Beasley. The season should be entertaining, and it’s definitely worth checking out for basketball fans. Here’s an overview of the schedule, viewing information and rosters for the 2022 BIG3 season.

According to the report, “the 2022-2023 campaign Ranking of the best children’s hospitals were created using data collected through a clinical survey sent to nearly 200 hospitals and a survey sent to thousands of pediatricians nationwide.”

Hospital rankings depended on the hospital’s performance in three main areas: clinical outcomes, effective coordination of care, and provision of care-related resources.

Former President Donald Trump is expected to hold a rally in support of Representative Mary Miller next weekend, but he has yet to endorse any of the candidates currently running for Illinois governor.

According to Republican insiders, Trump is expected to appear in Quincy for a Miller campaign rally, as she seeks to bring down fellow incumbent Rep. Rodney Davis.

Trump has already held a fundraiser for Miller at home during this year’s election cycle, and Miller is campaigning hard in hopes of bringing down Davis and keeping his redesigned seat in Congress.

According to Quincy Mayor Mike Troup, the former president is expected to appear at a June 25 rally, just days before the June 28 Illinois primary. The rally is scheduled to take place at the county’s fairgrounds, but no official announcement has been made. .

It’s also unclear if any Republican gubernatorial candidates will show up at the rally. Trump has yet to endorse the race, but several candidates, including State Sen. Darren Bailey, are still hopeful they will receive the former president’s backing.

“It’s a process, and when you get to that status, you wait,” Bailey said. “We’ve had some amazing opportunities to have conversations with him and seek that (support), and now we’re waiting.”

While Bailey and other gubernatorial candidates have indicated they would welcome Trump’s support, Aurora Mayor Richard Irvin, considered Bailey’s main challenger in the election, did not indicate that he was looking for that approval.

“I’m running for governor of Illinois,” he said in a televised forum in May. “I seek the approval of the voters of the State of Illinois.”

Some polls have shown Bailey leading Irvin in the gubernatorial primary race, including one recently conducted by the Chicago Sun-Times and WBEZ. Of Republicans polled in this poll, 67% say they did not believe Trump lost the 2020 election, despite there being no evidence of widespread voter fraud in President Joe Biden’s election.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker ran ads criticizing Irvin, and the Democratic Governors Association also ran ads criticizing Bailey’s campaign platform as “too conservative” for voters in the US. Illinois.

Asked about Trump’s potential appearance in the state for a rally, Pritzker criticized the former president as unpopular in Illinois.

“This state has turned him down by 17 percentage points,” he said of the 2020 election. “If he wants to come here and thinks he’s going to be popular here, he’s got something else coming .”

When then-Gov. Jim Thompson tried to recruit Jim Ryan to run for Illinois Attorney General in 1985, just a year after Mr. Ryan was elected DuPage County State’s Attorney, Mr. Ryan said no , feeling that he was not ready yet. The cautious decision set Mr Ryan apart in a political landscape of often brash and ambitious figures.

James E. Ryan, Illinois’ two-term attorney general from 1995 to 2003, who twice unsuccessfully ran for governor, died Sunday “after several long illnesses,” according to a family statement published in the newspaper. DuPage Policy Log. He was 76 years old.

“Former Illinois Attorney General Jim Ryan passed away peacefully at his home on June 12, 2022, at the age of 76 after several lengthy illnesses,” the statement said.

“Ryan’s considerable accomplishments as a public servant and earlier as a Golden Gloves boxing champion were overshadowed by the inspiring power of his perseverance and strength by faith amid a series of tragedies and challenges. devastating personnel,” the statement said.

Current Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul paid tribute to Mr. Ryan on Sunday evening.

“Jim Ryan has devoted much of his career to public safety, first as DuPage County State’s Attorney and then as Illinois Attorney General, and I strive to follow his example,” Raoul said in a statement. “Jim’s leadership as Attorney General and his commitment to protecting all Illinois residents is something I have done my best to reflect since taking office.”

Mr. Ryan was a popular new face in Republican politics when he was encouraged to leave his law firm, Ryan & Darrah, and run for DuPage County State’s Attorney in 1984. He beat Republican incumbent Michael Fitzsimmons by 13,000 votes in the Republican primary election and claimed victory in the November general election.

Mr. Ryan, a resident of Elmhurst, remained state’s attorney for DuPage County from 1984 until 1994, when he successfully ran for attorney general.

In 2002, Mr. Ryan gave up a possible third term as attorney general and ran for governor, losing to Democrat Rod Blagojevich.

Mr Ryan ran for governor again in 2010 but lost in a six-way Republican primary to Senator Bill Brady. His later political career was encumbered by other prominent Illinois politicians bearing Ryan’s last name, who weighed down the name with negative political baggage.

A candidate named Jack Ryan had quit the 2004 Senate race after it was revealed he had visited sex clubs with his then-wife. Former Governor George Ryan was convicted of federal charges in 2006, and a 2009 poll showed that 19% of those polled thought Jim Ryan was the former governor. Another candidate, former Arlington Heights mayor James T. Ryan, dropped out of the race for Illinois attorney general in 1986 due to allegations that he had violent outbursts.

Mr. Ryan has also battled health issues. He was diagnosed in 1996 with stage 2 non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and started chemotherapy. The disease returned in 2002 when he was the Republican candidate for governor.

Throughout his career, Mr. Ryan has been respected as a consensus builder who brought stakeholders to the table. Although some have complained that he governed in committee and moved slowly — Illinois under Ryan was only the 17th state to join a lawsuit in 1990 to recover tobacco industry damages — his supporters called it deliberative and thoughtful.

In 1997, Steve Neal, then a political columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times, wrote that Mr. Ryan had raised the profile of the attorney general’s office, in part by attacking toxic dumpers, polluters, online fraud and to gangs. As Attorney General, Mr. Ryan also helped found the Illinois Violence Prevention Initiative.

But Mr. Ryan has come under fire for his handling as state’s attorney of the 1983 murder case of 10-year-old Jeanine Nicarico of Naperville, which he inherited from Fitzsimmons. In this case, three men were wrongly charged and, under Mr. Ryan’s watch, two – Rolando Cruz and Alejandro Hernandez – were sentenced to death. After Cruz and Hernandez’s convictions were overturned, Mr. Ryan’s office retried them. All three men were eventually released, but Cruz and Hernandez did not get out of jail until after Mr. Ryan left the office.

Critics argued that Mr Ryan should have dropped the charges as it became increasingly clear that another man, Brian Dugan, had committed the crime acting alone. Dugan eventually pleaded guilty to the murder and is serving a life sentence. In 2009, Mr Ryan apologized for ‘not getting a fair result’ in the case.

Mr. Ryan was born in Chicago. Later, her father Edward Ryan, a builder of modest homes, moved the family to DuPage County. As a teenager, Mr. Ryan was a Golden Gloves boxer in West Side gyms.

He attended St. Procopius Academy, now named Benet Academy, and then St. Procopius College, now named Benedictine University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1968. He received his law degree in 1971 from Chicago-Kent College. of the law.

Beginning in 1976, Mr. Ryan served as an assistant district attorney for DuPage County, then served as the first assistant district attorney. He then went into private practice with John Darrah, later a federal judge, for eight years before leaving to run for state attorney.

After losing the gubernatorial race in 2002, Mr Ryan returned to Benedictine University in the western suburb of Lisle, where he taught courses in political science and criminal justice. He joined the Chicago office of Gardner, Carton & Douglas in 2003 and later served as an attorney with the Naperville law firm, Jim Ryan & Associates.

In 2005, Mr. Ryan established the Center for Civic Leadership at Benedictine University in partnership with the university’s Board of Trustees and the Faculty of Political Science.

“From the time I met him until his death, Jimmy always strived to do the right thing and help people,” his wife, Marie, said in the family statement. “That was who he was, and he did very well.”

In addition to his wife, Mr. Ryan is survived by four of his six children, John (Stacie) Ryan, Jim (Heather) Ryan, Matthew (Melissa) Ryan and Amy Ryan. “His youngest daughter, Anne Marie, died aged 12 in 1997 from an undiagnosed brain tumour, and Patrick, 24, died in 2007,” according to the family statement.

NEW YORK — The health of the Chicago Cubs rotation is quickly becoming a concern.

The Cubs placed right-hander Marcus Stroman on the 15-day disabled list on Friday, retroactive to Tuesday, with right shoulder inflammation. Stroman hasn’t felt well since returning from COVID IL on May 19, according to manager David Ross.

“The hope right now is that we can get him back as soon as possible,” Ross said. “When you have bumps and bruises, you’re not 100%. It affects everyone’s performance.

It’s also unclear when right-hander Kyle Hendricks will make his next start. Hendricks “takes care of some things,” Ross said Friday, which is why the Cubs gave him extra rest. Hendricks, who kicked off a bullpen Friday, hasn’t started since June 1.

“He will be launching in the near future,” Ross said. “If Kyle had nothing to do, he would pitch.”

The Cubs received another potential hit Friday night. Hours after being activated from the IL, southpaw Wade Miley left Friday’s 2-1 13-inning loss with left shoulder pain. Miley felt something in her shoulder on a pitch from Josh Donaldson in the third. He managed to complete all eight pitches at bat despite feeling pain lingering over the last four or five pitches, forcing Donaldson to line up on center field to end the inning.

The discomfort disappeared between the sleeves. But Miley threw a warm-up pitch before the fourth and knew her shoulder still wasn’t straight. Ross and a trainer rushed to check on him, and Miley came out. Left-hander Daniel Norris had already warmed up and was called in relief, giving up a home run on his first pitch. Miley pitched three scoreless innings against the Yankees, walking one and striking out two batters.

Left shoulder pain is a discouraging development for Miley after spending 15 days at IL with a pulled left shoulder. He described it as the same feeling that put him on IL. He felt good throwing what he described as “aggressive” bullpen runs over the past two weeks.

Miley’s shoulder will be checked Monday when the Cubs return to Chicago. He wouldn’t predict if he would need another trip to IL, noting that the last time he thought he didn’t need a stint at IL happened. turned out to be incorrect.

“It’s the same thing I followed IL for, which I wasn’t worried about at all — maybe I just didn’t give it enough time,” Miley said. “But it’s on me. I pushed myself away, but I feel fine.

“It’s just very frustrating.”

The Cubs have yet to announce who will start Sunday’s series finale at Yankee Stadium.

“There’s no secret formula that I have,” Ross said. “I want those guys over there for sure.”
